MSc Environmental Monitoring for Management

Department: Geography

The monitoring and sustainable management of our environment is perhaps the most important challenge facing society today.

This Masters programme equips students with the cutting-edge technical skills and critical analytical skills needed to meet those challenges. The focus of this MSc is the measurement, analysis and modelling of environmental data for research and management purposes.

Its goal is to train skilled scientists and technicians who are capable of asking the right questions, collecting the correct data, analysing it in an appropriate way and evaluating it in an applied context. There is, therefore a heavy emphasis on hands-on work in the field and laboratory. This contrasts with most Environmental MSc courses which focus on the theory and policies of environmental management.

Modules include: Tools for River Management, Applied Environmental GIS, Simulation Modelling in Environmental Management; Wind Erosion Management and Mitigation, Hydroclimatological Monitoring and Modelling, Lake Monitoring and Management; Evidence-Based Environmental management.

The programme also includes an innovative module that connects students to prospective employers – environmental consultants and relevant government agencies - and we have an excellent track record of post-graduation employment in the sector.
