Greener cleaner travel project wins European award

Pictured on the right receiving the award is Dr Lisa Davison and Dr Marcus Enoch.

A Loughborough University-led project to promote greener, cleaner travel choices and reduce the reliance on the car has won a prestigious European award.

The €1m TRAVEL PLAN PLUS project created a new approach to site-based mobility management across Europe by applying the concept of ‘Local Travel Plan Networks’.  These networks brought together groups of organisations to work collectively to manage and reduce their car use, helping them make energy savings through their travel planning as well as a reduction in CO2 emissions.

It involved partners from Cambridge in the UK, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden and Spain.

The project has now won an award from the European Platform on Mobility Management (EPOMM) for the best policy transfer project in the mobility management sector.

EPOMM is a non-profit network of governments in European countries that are engaged in mobility management.  With a seat in Brussels, it exists to set the agenda for mobility management in Europe.

The award was presented to the principal investigator of the project, Dr Marcus Enoch and project coordinator Dr Lisa Davison at the European Conference on Mobility Management held in Frankfurt in June.

Speaking about the award Marcus said: “It is fantastic that the pioneering work of the TRAVEL PLAN PLUS project has been recognised.  We set out with the aim of changing and improving the way organisations carry out their travel planning, encouraging them to work together to reduce their reliance on the car.  This has been achieved.”

It is now hoped the findings from the study will be used across Europe.

Research manager Chris Carter and Professor Steve Ison, both from the School of Civil and Building Engineering, were also members of the Loughborough University team.
