Lots to see and do at Loughborough University’s 2010 National Science and Engineering Week

An opportunity to learn how science and engineering helped to shape the 2010 FIFA World Cup football is on offer at Loughborough University next week.

As part of the University’s annual National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW), Dr Andy Harland from the Sports Technology Institute will be giving a unique insight into his work with adidas on the development of the Jabulani™ football.

His lecture is taking place on Monday 15 March at 6.30pm.  It is free of charge and open to members of the community (suitable for people aged 12 years and upwards), staff and students.  To book tickets contact Karen Roxborough by calling 01509 222186.

On Tuesday 16 March at 6pm the annual Sir Nevill Mott lecture will be taking place, hosted by the Department of Physics.  This year the guest speaker is Professor Brian Josephson, winner of the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physics and a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge.  He will present an alternative perspective to the general assumption among physicists that nature is governed by fundamental laws of a mathematical character, focussing instead on the view that nature is fundamentally alive rather than mechanical or mathematical.

This free public lecture is open to all.  For more information please contact Victoria Webster by calling 01509 223301.

A number of other events for schools are taking place across campus from the 15 to the 21 March as part of National Science and Engineering Week.  The week aims to celebrate science and engineering and their importance to our lives, giving people the chance to participate in science and engineering activities and experiments, and to engage in related discussions in their local area.

For full details on all the campus events please visit www.lboro.ac.uk/nsew/ or contact Jackie Baseley, National Science and Engineering Week Coordinator for Loughborough University, by emailing j.a.baseley@lboro.ac.uk.
