Loughborough hosts Japanese students

Waseda Students

Students from Waseda University, along with Dr Masashi Miyashita are given an insight into research being undertaken at Loughborough University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences

LOUGHBOROUGH University's School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SSEHS) recently played host to five research students from Waseda University in Tokyo.

Last year, the University became a member of the Waseda led Global Centre of Excellence (GCOE) consortium of world leading institutions which aims to develop highly creative young researchers who go on to become leaders in their respective fields through experiencing and practicing research of the highest world standard.

Central to this will be the opportunity for academics and postgraduate students from both universities to take part in exchanges, engage in shared research and contribute to doctoral level teaching. Both institutions will work together to identify appropriate opportunities for collaborative teaching and research in shared areas of expertise.

Professor Myra Nimmo, Director of SSEHS, commenting on what was a welcome and productive visit, said: “The initiative underlined the excellence of the students in the two institutions, the exceedingly high quality research being undertaken and value of the international partnership now being developed"

The Japanese student group included researchers in biomechanics, physiology and psychology and were accompanied by Waseda academic staff member, Dr Masashi Miyashita, himself a Loughborough PhD graduate.

Each member of the group teamed up with SSEHS PhD students and were able to gain first hand insights into the Loughborough research student world, and both the Waseda and Loughborough students were also given the opportunity to make formal presentations on their own research areas.

It is anticipated that Waseda will be inviting a Loughborough student group to Japan in the near future.

Professor Kazuyuki Kanosue, Director of the Waseda GCOE programme, said: "The returning students have commented on how wonderful an experience it had been for them and how they had much enjoyed their interaction with their Loughborough counterparts".

He considered the visit to have been a very successful and innovative way of initiating the Waseda/Loughborough link and hoped it was the start of the exchange of research staff and students between the two universities.
