Support during your studies
Loughborough University has a strong tradition of looking after its students and is able to deliver much of this support through the following guidance and welfare support sections:
Student Medical Centre and Pharmacy
The Medical Centre is situated in the centre of the campus close to the student village.
Registration with the Centre can be accepted from students and their immediate family who live locally, whether on campus or within a three mile radius of campus. This registration ensures access to local National Health Service (NHS) facilities.
The medical centre is open from 8.00am-5.30pm from Monday to Friday and provides a range of GP and nurse appointments. In addition the Medical Centre also provides a nurse walk-in service as well as a variety of clinics to meet students’ needs. An Out-of-Hours service operates between 6.30pm and 8.00am daily.
The University’s Pharmacy is located next to the Students’ Union building. It is open throughout the day, and offers a full medicine prescription service, as well as stocking a wide range of toiletries and other related products. Lifestyle checks and advice on all health-related issues are available to students, on a completely confidential basis.
Counselling Service
We offer a highly confidential professional service that can help with a variety of problems including mild to severe anxiety and depression.
Counsellors aim to be as understanding as they can of the issues you bring and the feelings you have about them. Counselling is a process of helping you explore and express your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
Doing this usually brings relief and may enable you to make some changes in your life, or it may help you deal more effectively with things that can’t be changed.
We also run popular workshops on such topics as Stress Management, Creativity, Meditation, and How to stop putting things off. Please also look at our website for lots of information about common problems plus online counselling, self help resources and our news page.
Disabilities and Additional Needs (DANS), including the Mental Health Support Team
DANS arranges support for students with a wide range of additional needs, including physical disabilities, sensory impairments and medical conditions.
We provide support to students who face barriers affecting their ability to study as a result of mental health issues, and develop practical strategies to deal with many obstacles to academic progression. We also provide support and tuition for students who have dyslexia, dyspraxia and other specific learning difficulties.
The University has good access for students who are wheelchair users, or who have mobility problems. There is car parking on campus, and most of the buildings on campus are wheelchair accessible and adapted bedrooms are available in most halls of residence across the campus. You are invited to contact us to discuss any support or additional facilities you may require. Should you wish to arrange a visit to discuss your requirements in more detail or see the campus and its facilities we recommend that you do this before applying through UCAS.
Members of staff also help students to apply to their Local Education Authority, the Student Loans Company or social services department for funding to pay for the support they require. DANS is an audited and accredited DSA QAG (Disabled Student Allowance Quality Assurance Group) assessment centre.
Information is available on our web pages or by telephone on +44 (0)1509 222770 (minicom 01509 228339) or by email. Information can also be supplied on disk, in Braille, or on tape.

The Student Support Centre, has two sections, the Student Advice and Support Service and the English Language Support Service.
The English Language Support Service offers help for students whose first language is not English by running pre-sessional and insessional courses in English language and Study Skills, and offering one-to-one tutorial support and advice.

- other legal matters e.g. consumer/employment rights
International students can also receive advice in the following areas:

- settling into the UK and life at university
Centre for Faiths and Spirituality
The Centre is the focus of religious, spiritual and faith based activities on campus.
It includes a dedicated Christian chapel, a Muslim Prayer Hall, a Quiet Room, a small specialist library and a number of rooms and facilities that can be used by student faith groups, individual members of the world faiths and others. The Centre serves as the meeting place for student groups like the Christian Union, the Chinese Christian Fellowship, Christians in Sport, the Islamic Society, and the Jewish, Sikh and Hindu communities on the campus.
The Centre is also the home to the University Chaplains. The Chaplains are available to all students of any religious persuasion or of none. Their purpose is to help students to explore contemporary faith issues through a variety of events, activities and campaigns throughout the year.
The Chaplains have good relationships with local churches and places of worship, prayer and meditation in Loughborough and produce a number of resources and directories to help students make contact with relevant groups in the wider community. The Chaplains also provide confidential, individually tailored pastoral and spiritual support and direction to those who request it.
Throughout the year there are a number of major events organised by the Chaplains or the faith groups. These include the annual Christian Carol Service, Muslim Eid, Jewish new year as well as other significant festivals in the faith calendar.
There are opportunities for students to play an active role as part of the Centre as ‘Chaplaincy Assistants’. Working in a voluntary capacity, Chaplaincy Assistants engage in a variety of different activities appropriate to their interests. Students who work with the Centre earn credit towards the Loughborough University Employability Award.
