Managing your Usage
Introduction
There is a restriction on how much space you can use on University provided file store. You may be directed to this page when you reach 95% of this. We have provided Windows users with a tool called Windirstat to help identify the largest files so that you can quickly manage your usage.
How Can I Access the Tool?
WinDirStat is accessible from University Labs, the Library, Wireless using the eduroam secure network, or Hallnet. Please note the tool is not available via home or web file access.
Step by Step Instructions for Using the Application
-
Click to run the application. A message box will appear, select Run to start the application.

-
Click Run in the warning message.
-
A message box will appear asking you to select a drive to scan. Only select the (U) drive to scan and click OK.

-
The scan will take a few seconds to complete. During this time you will see Pac Man type images moving across the screen.

-
When the scan has finished, you will see colourful images at the bottom half of the screen known as a treemap. The treemap represents each file as a coloured rectangle, the area of which is proportional to the file's size. The colour of rectangle indicates the type of file, as illustrated in the extension list.
To the left of the screen you will see a list of files and folders. The list is arranged in size order so you can easily see which files are using most space. Clicking on a folder will also select the folder in the treemap and selecting a file in the treemap will select it in the file and folder list.

-
To cleanup or delete selected files, select Clean Up at the top left hand of the screen and click on the appropriate option. Alternatively, highlighting a file in the file and folder list or the treemap then pressing the delete key will also delete selected files.

-
To view the free space of each drive, select Options from the top of the screen and then click Show Free Space.
