Word 2007 Auto-Numbering
How do I set up automatic numbering of Headings in Word 2007?
You can have Headings (selected by Styles Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) automatically numbered. The first question is: Do you want the document automatically numbered like a legal document with all the heading styles automatically numbered (e.g. 1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2, 2.1, ...), or do you just want Heading 1 automatically numbered (e.g. Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.).
Legal Document Numbering
-
Go to the first Heading 1-styled text in your document (insert some if you haven't got any) and click in it.
-
On the Home tab in the Paragraph group you will see three buttons at the top left of the group (reading left-to-right): Bulleted List, Numbered List, and Multi-Level list. Click the drop-down arrow next to the Multilevel List button.

-
Select a numbering scheme.

-
To customise, select Define New Multivel List (near the bottom).

-
Make your selections. For example, you could add the word "Chapter " in front of the 1 in Enter formatting for number. Note that there is a More button.
-
Click OK to close the Define new Multilevel List dialogue.
Automatically numbering just the Chapters / Heading 1
-
From the Home tab, open the Styles window by clicking the "widget" at the bottom right of the Styles group, or press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S.

-
Move the mouse over Heading 1, click on the drop-down widget and select Modify.

-
Click on Format and select Numbering.

-
On the Numbering tab select a style.

-
You can also use the Define New Number Format button for further customisation e.g. for automatically inserting the word "Chapter".

-
Click OK to close the Define New Number Format dialogue.
-
Click OK to close the Numbering and Bullets dialogue.
