Student Printing with Remote Working Client from OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard

Introduction

Once you have followed these instruction to set up the Student-Mono and Student-Colour printers, you can print to them from off campus provided that you have first connected using the VPN Client; you can subsequently collect your printout when you are next on campus.

Set up

You will need to do the set up either on campus, or you can follow the instructions at home after you have connected using the VPN client.

Introduction

The following step by step instructions are for Mac OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard and 10.5.x Leopard printing to charged printers.

  1. Download the latest Ricoh drivers for OS X 10.6 and install them.

  2. In System Preferences select Print And Fax.

    Print & Fax.

  3. Click the + symbol to add a new printer.

  4. If you have the Advanced option in your Add Printer Window choose it. If not you will need to customise your toolbar which you do by Ctrl-clicking on the tool bar area and selecting Customize Toolbar from the contextual menu.

    Contextual menu.

  5. Drag Advanced to the toolbar. Then click to select it and choose Windows from the menu.

Drag your favorite items into the toolbar...

  6. The Printer URL should be filled in in the form of smb://printers.lboro.ac.uk/student-mono where the Student Mono queue is required. (For adding the Student Colour queue see step 11.)

    Add Printer.

  7. At present the driver to select is Ricoh Afficio MP 5000. Click Add.

    Printer Software.

  8. Optionally change the name of the printer here to change what will be shown in the Print & Fax control panel and in the Printers list when printing. Click Add.

    Add printer.

  9. For Option Tray select Lower Paper Trays.

    Installable Options.

  10. When printing you will be prompted for your username and password which should be filled in as shown, with Registered User selected, Name in the format LUNET\username and Password completed with your University password. If you are the sole user of your system you may choose to Remember this password in my keychain which means you will no longer be prompted for your username and password as the job will be sent to the printer automatically, and you will be charged accordingly when you print.

    Enter username and password.

  11. For adding the Student Colour queue these same steps should be followed except that in step 6 the path is smb://printers.lboro.ac.uk/student-colour and the driver to be used is Ricoh Afficio MP C5000.

Printing to the print queue

When sending a job to the print queue if you are not prompted for your username and password immediately the job will appear in the printer window (this window will open automatically when printing) on hold requiring authentication. Highlight the job and click Resume, and then enter Lunet\ followed by your university username, and password. This will release the job for printing.
