Accessing Our Services Off Campus

All Users

If you are not using a Staff Desktop computer, you can use Free Anti-Virus Software see www.lboro.ac.uk/it/security/antivirus-free.html.

Firstly, you can access your e-mail via webmail (see links below), and you can view pages on the University Intranet https://internal.lboro.ac.uk from your web browser.

Secondly, you can update files on your Individual File Store or your Department's shared drive or your department's Intranet or (staff only) the Learn server using Web File Access. To use this Web File Access service, direct your browser to wfa.lboro.ac.uk. A Web File Access Movie www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/web-file-access.html and Web File Access answers to frequently asked questions www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/wfa-faq.html are available.

However, some facilities are still not available, either for privacy and security reasons (e.g. telephone and e-mail directories, printer credits) or because of Licensing restrictions (some Library services). IT Services created the University wide Remote Working service for all members of staff and students.

This service allows users to interact with many more on-campus services than before, from your home to locations around the world, providing a truly international experience to IT Services at Loughborough.

Remote Working Client

IT Services recommend that where possible users download and install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client if they wish to access on-campus services remotely. The VPN client is installed by default on all XP Mobile Service laptops and is an optional application on Staff Desktop Service PCs. For all other Windows PCs, as well as for Mac and Linux based PC, the client can be downloaded from our website. Please see the relevant section below for further details on where to find the VPN client and how to use it.

You can also Access the Virtual Private Network from an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad - see https://internal.lboro.ac.uk/it/uniwide/info/vpn/iphone.html.

Staff Desktop only

If you are using an IT Services managed computer (Staff Desktop Service), a full Remote Working Client will be pre installed and available from the 'IT Services Menu' on your laptop. If you take a Staff Desktop Service desktop computer (as opposed to a laptop) home, you can install the Client as an optional application. Information on the Remote Client www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/client.html.

Other users - Staff and Students

IT Services have made the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client available to all Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, Mac OS X (10.5 Leopard and above) and Linux users. Further information on how to download, install and use the VPN client can be found at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/anyconnect.html.

If you wish you can install the Remote Working Client. Information on Installing the Windows Remote Client is available at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/client-windows-install.html. Information on the Remote Client is available at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/client.html. If you use a Macintosh, an alternative Remote Working Client is available. Information on the Macintosh Remote Client is available at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/client-mac.html.

Remote Working Portal

The IT Services 'Remote Working Portal' is available to anyone with a University username and password from any Internet-connected computer. However, the Remote Working Portal does not permit access to all of the resources which are available using the AnyConnect VPN client (for instance a number of web-based journals do not function fully when accessed using the Remote Working Portal) and IT Services recommend the use of the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client wherever possible. You can access the system straight away by navigating through to the portal web site https://vpn.lboro.ac.uk/. See also Information on the Remote Working Portal available at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/portal.html.

Other Services for all users

You can also use this service to access other services via the web, such as the Library Catalogue OPAC. Not all Internet Service Providers give you the right access or flexibility so you should choose one with care. Our current recommendations and advice are set out in the pages Choosing an I.S.P. www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/choose.html and Choosing an I.S.P. for Mac users www.lboro.ac.uk/it/off-campus/choose-mac.html.

Please note that the use of all services and networks is subject to the acceptable use policies that apply.

If you live in a Hall of Residence, you can not dial-in to an Internet Service Provider. You can use the Hall Network Service HallNet www.lboro.ac.uk/it/hallnet/.
