Background
Mike Waring is currently Senior Lecturer of Physical Education in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Having been awarded a first class B.Ed. (Hons.) degree in physical education from Leeds Carnegie, he taught physical education in secondary schools before receiving an ESRC Scholarship and then a Departmental Scholarship to complete an MSc (Sports Science) and PhD respectively in the Department of PE, Sport Science and Recreational Management at Loughborough University. He then took up a lecturing position at Canterbury Christ Church College to establish the Secondary PE PGCE programme. In 1997 he moved to the University of Durham to similarly establish and direct the Secondary PE PGCE course in the School of Education. In 2001 he received the University of Durham's Excellence in Teaching Award. He took up his present position on 20th October 2003.
Research Interests
His research interests focus on three complementary areas. The first is 'teaching and learning', one element of which involves the critical debate and research on current and future directions of teaching and learning in physical education. The second area is the critique and development of grounded theory methodology. The third is the level and determinants of young peoples' involvement in physical activity.
With regards to teaching, Mike currently contributes to the Secondary PE PGCE programme and is Director of the MSc in Physical Education (from January 2004).
