How to apply

First check the modules (courses) that are offered in physics and other subjects. You will be able to take any Physics lecture module that is running. Your study programme should be largely Physics-based, although it is usually possible to take a small number of modules from some other departments. Discuss your study programme with your local coordinator and with the Erasmus Coordinator for Physics at Loughborough. It is important to do this before you apply, as the list of available modules may change from year to year; it is especially important to check with the Coordinator if you wish to take any modules outside Physics. If you plan to combine modules from different years or from different departments, timetable constraints may prevent certain combinations. Note that the Loughborough teaching year comprises 120 credits (60 credits per semester). 10 Loughborough credits corresponds to 5 ECTS credits.

You should have sufficient knowledge of English to be able to follow lectures. The English Language Study Unit offers a number of pre-sessional courses in August/September for those that need to improve their fluency in English.

Information about Loughborough University

Loughborough has welcomed students since the first of the Loughborough Colleges, established in 1909. The former College of Advanced Technology obtained its University charter in 1966. The University ranks equal first among full-time students for student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2005 and 2006), and physical science at Loughborough is the most popular subject in the country. The University is well known as a centre of excellence in engineering, and has close links with industry. It is also famous in the sporting area, with excellent sports facilities, and counts many Olympic medallists amongst its graduates. It has an attractive 165-hectare single-site campus at the western end of the town, with first class facilities for every aspect of student life.

Dates of terms and semesters

Teaching and examinations are divided into two semesters of fifteen weeks each (not including a four-week Christmas vacation and a three-week Easter vacation). The first twelve weeks of a semester are devoted to teaching or revision and the last three to examination. Most modules are taught over a single semester. The semester dates for 2006 to 2009 are given here.
