Returning students

  1. The results of the SAP will be available on Wednesday, 17 September.

  3. Your timetables will be available in the first year lab from 09.00 on Monday, 29 September. Physics lectures on that day will start at 12.00; please note that teaching by other Departments may start at an earlier or later time. Timetables are now on the web.
  4. The regulations (all programmes) for 2008-9 and the Physics programnme handbook are available here. The other programme handbooks will follow soon. There are some changes in the programme content to align them to the Institute of Physics benchmarks as listed below. Please check your regulations.
    1. There are no major changes in Physics and Engineering Physics.
    2. Sports Science and Physics students will notice that Information Skills and Thermal Physics are now compulsory modules in Part B in place of Solids and Fluids and Electronics. Nuclear Physics and Quantum Mechanics 1 are now compulsory modules in Part C.
    3. Physics and Mathematics students will notice that Nuclear Physics is now a compulsory module in Part C.
    4. Physics and Management students will notice that Information Skills is now a compulsory module in Part B in place of Joint Physics Laboratory.
    5. IT and Physics students will notice that Nuclear Physics is now a compulsory module in Part C in place of Science of the Internet.
  5. You will have the same Personal Tutor as last year; a list will be on the notice board. Please call in some time in the first fortnight of the term.
  6. You can find the list of modules you have registered for on Learn. (Note that the new Learn server is in operation.) If you would like to change an option for this semester, let Maureen know by Friday, 10 October. You should check with your Programme Tutor whether your choice is suitable. If undecided about your choices, you could (space permitting) attend all the lectures you might be interested in for a week or two. Boris Chesca is the Programme Tutor for joint honours programmes (PHM, PMAN, SSP, ITP); John Samson is the Programme Tutor for PH and EPH.
  7. Nominations for the Staff Student Committee should be given to John Samson by Friday, 17 October. We need a representative for each year of each degree programme.
  8. Final year project students should contact their supervisor as soon as possible to discuss their project.
  9. Part B students: if you are planning to take a sandwich year, which is highly recommended, you should get in touch with Klaus Neumann (who is responsible for ERASMUS exchange study) or Richard Giles (who is responsible for industrial placements) fairly soon.
  10. MPhys Part C students (especially Engineering Physics): In Part D you can take at most 20 credits of C modules; you should make your module choices carefully bearing in mind your plans for Part D and the relevant prerequisites. Contact your programme tutor for advice.
  11. For further information see the University page for returning students.
  12. Freshers' Induction Day is Friday, 26 September. If you're around, you're welcome to drop in to the first year lab at about 10.30 to say hello; see the programme here.
