StructureThis programme provides the opportunity to apply physics knowledge to consider philosophical aspects of life from a rational standpoint. Students concentrate on core Physics, Mathematics and Astrophysics for the first two years enabling them to choose from a wide variety of modules in the final year in addition to the compulsory Cosmology modules and Project. The emphasis on cosmology in the final year is unusual in a UK university where astronomy/astrophysics are more commonly associated with physics degrees. The module content in the first two years is very similar to Physics and Engineering Physics. This means that there is considerable flexibility for the student who wants to keep open the option to transfer from one programme to another. At the end of the second year students can choose to take a sandwich year of employment in industry or a year of study abroad or proceed directly to the third year. The provisional content of the programme is given below. Students take modules of total weight of 60 credits each semester. All modules have a weight of 10 credits unless a larger number is dictated in brackets. Modules listed in italics are optional; not all options will run in any one year. The list gives the content for 2010–11. For full details of requirements see current Programme Regulations.
