Dr John (J H) Samson, CPhys MInstP, Senior Lecturer in Physics Department of Physics, Loughborough University, Loughborough, Leics LE11 3TU, United Kingdom Email: j.h.samson@lboro.ac.uk I currently teach the following modules: PHA181 Physics Laboratory 1Introductory laboratory class for first-year Physics and Engineering Physics students, relating to the Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism modules.
PHC130 Fundamentals of Quantum InformationThis module introduces the concepts of quantum theory from the standpoint of a polarised photon. After developing the postulates of quantum mechanics for such two-state systems and discussing their numerous interpretations, we introduce the idea of entanglement, a concept crucial to quantum information but with no classical analogue. Finally, we show how such ideas can be applied to cryptography and teleportation.
PHD230 Quantum ComputingThis follows on from PHC130. After an introduction to the theory of computation and a discussion of complexity classes — what problems are inherently difficult for a classical computer — we discuss the requirements for a quantum computer and the problems such a device, if built, could tackle. Finally we look at a few proposed implementations.
PHD205 Elementary Particle PhysicsThis module covers the properties and interactions of elementary particles. It includes a non-technical discussion of the ideas of relativistic quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and gauge theory, and concludes with speculation about a "Theory of Everything".
