Living in the Sun's atmosphere
The Sun regularly produces immense eruptions and explosions which, if Earth directed, can disrupt electrical power lines and damage satellites. Two new missions are helping us understand this Sun-Earth interaction by studying our closest star in incredible detail. Results so far have given us the first 3D views of the Sun's dynamic atmosphere and are revealing the process at work behind the biggest eruptions and explosions in the solar system.

Tue 29 Apr
Alan Davies (University of Hertfordshire)
Rainbows, halos and glories

Programme occasionally subject to change: please confirm the details of the talks before travelling long distances.

What is the Loughborough Physics Centre?

The Loughborough Physics Centre is sponsored by the Midland Branch of the Institute of Physics and the Loughborough Advanced Technology Initiative

The aim of the centre is to bring physics to the general public through lecture demonstrations given by invited speakers. The talks are intended to inform about recent developments in physical science and to show the use and relevance of physics in a wide range of areas; from engineering bridges to studying galaxies.

Speakers are selected for their knowledge of a particular field and for their ability to communicate ideas and enthusiasm to the audience. The talks are pitched at a level that should be appropriate for fifth/sixth form students. However, anyone with an interest in physics or an inquisitive mind should find something of interest. All members of the public are welcome; admission is free. There is no need to book.

These talks are not organised by the Department of Physics. For further information about these events contact Dr Mike Petty, Loughborough Surface Analysis Ltd 01509 283069 m.petty@lsaltd.co.uk
