THE SCIENCE AND APPLICATION OF
HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS
Prof Colin Gough
University of Birmingham
In this talk, which will include demonstrations of important superconducting properties, we will outline the unique properties of high temperature superconductors. These properties make possible many potential applications in power and device engineering, communications and computing. We will review the remarkable strides made in improving the technological performance of the cuprate high temperature superconductors since their discovery in 1987. A brief review of some of the most important potential applications will be given. This will include the replacement underground power lines for power distribution networks, more efficient and much lighter electrical motors, SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices) to monitor heart problems and brain signals, filters for enhanced mobile telephone and Rapid Single Flux Quantum logic for what is potentially the world's fastest computers.
All welcome. Admission free. Refreshments available before the talk
