Illustrating the concept of quantum information

At first sight, quantum information may be viewed as a kind of quantum analogue of Shannon's classical information. Yet it differs in essential ways from its classical precursor and, as a precise concept, remains enigmatic. Nevertheless it provides a novel and fertile point of view for the consideration of quantum physics.

We will discuss two interesting issues of quantum physics that are strongly motivated by such an informational perspective. Firstly we develop a qualitative strengthening of the famous no-cloning theorem, leading to a notion of "permanence" of quantum information. Secondly we will consider the phenomenon of quantum information compression. By considering its somewhat surprising relation to non-orthogonality of quantum states, we will obtain new insights into the relationship between quantum information and the geometry of quantum state space.
