I present calculations from an extended Migdal-Eliashberg theory which
includes vertex and non-local corrections to the self-energy. I
demonstrate how vertex corrections and spatial fluctuations are
essential to construct the correct weak to mid coupling theory for
quasi-2D systems, and discuss the normal phase. Using the Nambu
formalism, the approach is extended to the superconducting phase. The
order parameter and phase diagram are computed, and are discussed with
reference to BCS theory, Hohenberg's theorem and the effects of
Coulomb repulsion.
