Effects of magnetic frustration in spin ½ quantum chain systems

Wednesday, 10 May 2006, 14.00, W0.03

Frustration in one-dimensional spin ½ systems can lead to ground states which have no classical analogue, such as described e.g. by the Majumdar-Ghosh Hamiltonian. I will present specific heat, susceptibility, high field magnetization and neutron diffraction on one-dimensional Cu2+ compounds which are magnetically frustrated due to nearest- and next-nearest-neighbour exchange interactions along the chain.
