Gonville and Caius College (commonly known as 'Caius', pronounced 'Keys') was founded as Gonville Hall in 1348 and refounded in 1558 by John Caius, physician to Edward VI, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I. The College stands on two sites. The older courts are next to the Senate House and the marketplace, and are the most central in Cambridge; Caius Court is one of the finest renaissance courts in the University. Harvey Court, built in 1962, is just across the river, seven minutes' walk away, very close to the University Library and the new Arts faculty buildings. Although divided in this way, the College acts as a single community, and all Fellows and undergraduates take their meals together in the College Hall. Undergraduates are offered accommodation throughout their course, in College for the first and third years, and in hostels near the university cricket ground for the second year. Most rooms are bedsitters, but there are also many two-room sets.
