Dr Sarah Maude PhD (2007) Research project: UV absorbance of nano powders
Sean Smith
PhD Student
Research Project - Metallurgy concentrating on materials for power generation
I did my undergraduate degree here in the department and decided to stay on to do a PhD as I was offered the exciting opportunity of working in a research consortium made up of several Industrial partners and four academic institutions. Being part of the scheme meant that I could further my academic career, maintain strong links with industry and that I’d have access to significant resources and samples not available in a traditional PhD programme
Dr Sarah Ogden
Materials Engineer. E.ON New Build Technology
PhD - Micro-structural evolution of coated Ni-based superalloys with time and temperature
I was an undergraduate within the Department and decided to stay on to do a PhD, as I had the opportunity to work on a project relating to gas turbine materials which was of real interest to me. The project involved a large research consortium of universities and industrial partners within the UK power generation supply sector. My research was focussed on the micro-structural evolution of coated Ni-based superalloys with time and temperature.
Dr Duncan Putman
Staff Technologist, Materials and Process Modelling, Rolls-Royce
PhD - Modelling of microstructural evolution in austempered ductile iron
After studying for my undergraduate degree in Materials Engineering within the Department, staying on to do a PhD seemed like the natural continuation of a very successful final year project, which had developed my interest in materials research. The topic of my PhD was the modelling of microstructural evolution in austempered ductile iron. The PhD gave me an excellent technical base for further career development, as well as the backing of a postgraduate research qualification from a highly respected research-intensive university.
Dr Roshan Chapaneri
Research Chemist, MacDermid
PhD - Investigation into Hexavalent and Trivalent Chromium Conversion Coatings on Zinc Electrodeposited Steel
I did a PhD at Loughborough which was sponsored by MacDermid and this ultimately led to me getting a permanent job with them after I gained my doctorate. As the Department of Materials was offering the chance of gaining experience of working with an international company whilst studying for my PhD it presented just the kind of opportunity I was looking for.
Dr Steve Owen
Technical Consultant, Alliance Boots
PhD - The mechanical and fire retardant properties of ABS Plastic
As Loughborough has a reputation for excellence in materials science I knew the Materials Department would be able to offer me the right kind of support and supervision for my PhD. I graduated with a PhD in the mechanical and fire retardant properties of ABS Plastic around 13 years ago and am now working as a Technical Consultant for Alliance Boots. The role is very varied and is based around protecting the Boots brand by delivering customer satisfaction through ensuring that our products are safe and of good quality.
