Sean Smith

Sean Smith

PhD Student
Research Project - Metallurgy concentrating on materials for power generation

I did my undergraduate degree here in the department and decided to stay on to do a PhD as I was offered the exciting opportunity of working in a research consortium made up of several Industrial partners and four academic institutions. Being part of the scheme meant that I could further my academic career, maintain strong links with industry and that I’d have access to significant resources and samples not available in a traditional PhD programme

Materials Engineer. E.ON New Build Technology
PhD - Micro-structural evolution of coated Ni-based superalloys with time and temperature

I was an undergraduate within the Department and decided to stay on to do a PhD, as I had the opportunity to work on a project relating to gas turbine materials which was of real interest to me. The project involved a large research consortium of universities and industrial partners within the UK power generation supply sector. My research was focussed on the micro-structural evolution of coated Ni-based superalloys with time and temperature.

Duncan Putman

Dr Duncan Putman

Staff Technologist, Materials and Process Modelling, Rolls-Royce
PhD - Modelling of microstructural evolution in austempered ductile iron

After studying for my undergraduate degree in Materials Engineering within the Department, staying on to do a PhD seemed like the natural continuation of a very successful final year project, which had developed my interest in materials research. The topic of my PhD was the modelling of microstructural evolution in austempered ductile iron. The PhD gave me an excellent technical base for further career development, as well as the backing of a postgraduate research qualification from a highly respected research-intensive university.
