Sue Parker, the IPR Manager and RD&T Coordinator of Tata Steel (formerly Corus) commented:
Each year Loughborough University Materials Department stage a Research Day to showcase their projects to the Industrial Companies with whom they associate and those who sponsor their research. This takes the form of presentations from 1st and 3rd year research students, and posters from 2nd year research students and postdoc researchers. The standard of the presentations is high, and gives a concise overview of the project aims and findings.
I have been coming to these events for the last 4 years, and they enable me to get a useful snapshot of the work ongoing in the Department. As an employer of Materials Graduates it also gives me the opportunity to spot prospective recruits, and judge the standard of post grads in general.
I think it also provides the students with a useful opportunity to interact with prospective employers, and get some industrial feedback on their projects and presentations. Modern business these days is all about influencing people by presenting your case well, in whatever area of business you operate. Being able to create a good presentation and stand up and present it is a key business skill. Loughborough Materials Department have recognised this, and the Research Day is a useful opportunity to focus students efforts on an occasion with some gravitas, and external visitors. As an event it is something that benefits all the participants, a win:win situation!
