International students

The department of Materials is a truly international community of staff and students from over 15 different countries.
Two of the most important aspects of the department for international students are the friendly atmosphere and helpful attitude of all the staff and other students, “everyone feels part of the family!”
International students are welcomed on all of our courses, both undergraduate and postgraduate as well as researching for a PhD. Approximately 50% of our students are from outside the UK and they make a great contribution to the department and the student experience for everyone.
Entry Requirements
Students are able to gain entry to our programmes with a variety of qualifications. Overseas students need to satisfy the University's English Language requirement before being accepted onto a degree programme. More information about entry requirements can be found within the postgraduate and undergraduate study sections of our website.

Year in industry
Overseas students studying on our undergraduate courses are most welcome to undertake the year in industry option (Diploma in Industrial Studies). No work visa is required as the placement is covered by the student visa.
This provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable professional experience in the UK and earn a salary from the company (typically earnings £16,500 per year).
Student accommodation and support
Overseas students are guaranteed a room in Hall of Residence for two years of study. Student bedrooms are networked, making it easy to keep in touch with family and friends via the internet. The student run International Student’s Association organises numerous popular social events including visits to different parts of the UK.
