Undergraduate students questions |
FAQsYou may find that your questions can be answered here.
1. How do I come to a University Open Day? Please see: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/prospectus/ug/opendays/ for details. Admissions, Programmes and Sandwich year 1. What Undergraduate programmes do you Offer? Information Management & Business Studies 2. I want to apply for one of your programmes what happens next? We will invite you to visit the Department of Information Science in December, January, February or March to discuss your completed application. There will be presentations by the programme tutors and tours of the campus with existing students. We will discuss with you your application and then make you an offer after the visit. In this way we ensure you know about us and we know enough about you to tailor an offer for your needs. We will send you an invitation AFTER you send in your UCAS application. Parents/guardians/friends are welcome to attend too 3. Will I be interviewed? Yes it gives you an opportunity to talk face to face with a member of the academic staff. The interview lasts for approximately 15 minutes. 4. Why do you interview candidates? We want to know the person behind the UCAS form. We receive hundreds of applications and can only take a proportion of these. We would like to have friendly and interesting students who have an interest in this area of study so we interview to see if that is so. 5. What will you ask in the interview? Mainly why you want to do the course and why you want to come to Loughborough. We are also interested in where you hope to work in the future and naturally your UCAS form will already tell us what you are studying and what your personal interests are. 6. What should I wear? Is it formal or informal? What impression do you want to create? This is an important day but you also need to feel comfortable so it is not required that you “dress-up”. Smart but casual is best. There will also be a half hour to one hour tour of campus so you may want to bring warm clothing/umbrella/walking shoes depending on the weather. 7. When will I be told who will be interviewing me and when? You will be told when you arrive and register on the day. 8. Can I bring my parent(s)? Yes please do. 9. When will I be told the result of the interview? Usually the Admission Team will get a letter out within 5 working days to inform you of the Department's decision. 10. Can I change my mind about the sandwich year? Yes. It is possible to transfer between the 3 year and 4 year sandwich option at any time during your application and even in years 1 and 2 of the course. 11. What if I have other qualifications? We look carefully at GNVQ, BTEC, ACCESS and Baccalaureate qualifications in combination with applicant profiles on the UCAS form and consider each application individually. We will consider mature applications on a variety of criteria including experience. 12. What if I miss my expected grades? If places are available and you have only missed by a couple of points or so we may reconsider your case. The best advice, in any eventuality, is for you to contact us when your exam results are known. 13. Can I defer my entry? Yes, there is no problem but we would like to know as soon as you have decided and, if possible, before the 'A' level or other results are released. 14. What about Sandwich courses, sponsorship and industrial placements? Students wishing to take the sandwich option do not have to have sponsorship or an industrial placement organised when they arrive. Opportunities for year out placements are advertised regularly and the department is happy to assist students in finding placements. 15. How big is the fresher’s intake? In the first year usually we have around 100-120 students across the degree programmes.
Refer to the Student Accommodation Web pages at http://accommodation.lboro.ac.uk/faqs.php Computers (What should I bring?) 1. What level of computer literacy is assumed? None, but obviously, whatever you can gain before the programme will assist you. 2. Which computer should I buy? The Department is well provisioned with equipment for your programme. We will be updating the computer labs again this year. The University also provides students with a Computer Centre open 24 hours a day!! However, if you still want to buy your own the Computer Centre will assist you after you become a registered Loughborough student. They will also give you a list of recommended suppliers and technical specifications on what to buy. You can choose a room in a hall of residence which has a network/Internet connection. Discuss this with the Residential Organisation. The Department does not deal with accommodation. Student Union and working locally 1. How do I find out what is on offer at the SU? A full list of Union clubs and societies and Athletic Union clubs is available via the Student Union. 2. Can I work locally or on campus? Yes. The student union has its own Employment Exchange to help you find work. Financial Assistance for UK students Access to Learning Fund All Universities in England are allocated a sum of money each year known as the Hardship Fund from which grants can be made to students experiencing serious financial difficulties. All home (UK) students can apply and all deserving cases will receive help; in accordance with Hardship Fund guidelines, however, the Access to Learning Fund Panel at Loughborough will give priority to specific categories of student such as those covered by the Opportunity Bursaries initiative.
