MSc in Human Geography Research

This programme offers an overview of contemporary methods and techniques in the social sciences, and is specifically designed to meet the needs of those considering undertaking research at graduate level. Combining hands-on experience of planning and executing research projects in the social sciences with a critical overview of debates in methodology, the course offers the ideal grounding for students wishing to pursue a PhD in human geography. More broadly, the course is designed to equip students from a wide range of backgrounds with general and subject-specific research skills that would allow them to be employed in a research position in either the private, public or voluntary sector.

The MSc in Human Geography Research is an academic and practical programme taught by leading researchers in the Department of Geography and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, and is a one-year, full-time course (NB: on completion, students may enrol on a Geography PhD which can be completed in a minimum of two years).


The MSc in Human Geography Research consists of seven core modules:

  • Globalization: key ideas and issues – explores how globalization has been
    conceptualised and explored in geography and the social sciences.

  • Practising Human Geography – which applies practical training skills to research in economic, political and social change.

  • Research Design – which provides extensive training in the design of research projects.

  • Qualitative Methods and Analysis – which provides training in survey methods and statistical analysis.

  • Quantitative Methods and Analysis - which provides training and experience in utilising methods of textual analysis, interviewing and participant observation.

  • Effective Management of Research – an introduction to principles of project management, organisation and dissemination.

  • Dissertation – based on personal research on a geographical topic of the student’s choice (to be negotiated with a personal dissertation supervisor).
