Biography

My PhD

Since registering on the PhD programme I reconsidered the scope of my proposed research and re-defined my research aims.  My project was first defined as an exploration of postanarchist theory and, in particular, a critique of the euro-centricism of postanarchism.  The proposal was to examine postanarchist treatments of the nineteenth century ‘classical’ anarchist tradition and to show that, whilst seeking to correct the faulty epistemological and teleological bias of traditional theory, postanarchists remained wedded to a conception of the anarchist past which was itself faulty.  Postanarchists were ‘anti-modernist modernists’.

In the course of a number of discussions and, more especially, in the light of the feedback generated by my colloquium paper, I refocused this study.  And instead of working within broad and contestable frameworks of modernism, postmodernism and anti-modernism, I decided that the bulk of the thesis shall present a historiography of anarchism.  Thus it will provide the groundwork for the critique I initially envisaged. My approach will be a genealogical one.
