Biography

I completed a BA in Politics and an MA in Political Philosophy at Queen’s University Belfast from 2004-2009.  These included dissertation topics concerning various aspects of anarchist politics and philosophy.

I joined the department at Loughborough in October 2011 to begin my current area of research, into the relationships between anarchism and punk.  This research takes a contemporary focus and addresses a wide range of issues including (not exhaustively): politicisation of the individual; politics of production in the music industry; the ethic of DIY (do it yourself!); music as a tool for reinforcing and countering cultural hegemony; the causal relationship between music and politics etc.  The research then examines these themes in relation to contemporary case studies to ascertain how (or if?) punk culture promotes, creates and embodies anarchist politics in practice.

I have been a frequent contributor to Belfast-based anarchist publication The Leveller among others (under assumed pseudonyms), as well as being involved in various forms of activist campaigning.
