Research
Looking outward for practical answers to real-world problems.
The School has a formidable and well-deserved international reputation for research. Our research quality is recognised by an excellent rating in the most recent UK Research Assessment Exercise by independent peers (2008).
95% of the School’s research activity is of an international standard.
Accordingly, we give research a high priority, with a clear commitment to continually strengthen and revitalise our research base which is strategically focussed on augmenting and passing on knowledge in three critical areas of modern day life: Communications, Energy and Systems.
- Communications - From mobile telecoms to secure internet technologies and complex image and signal processing, our solutions are commonly exploited by our industry partners.
- Energy - We’re working on the development of secure and sustainable energy supplies for industry, homes and commerce, and new energy applications in medicine, aerospace, defence and the food industry.
- Systems - As technology solutions become ever more complex, our cutting-edge systems engineering work focuses upon the effective integration of people, processes, tools and technology in order to improve the development of new, innovative products.
Within these three divisions we have nine research groups and a number of dedicated research centres. We are also members of two of the University's interdisciplinary research schools.
Supporting us and helping to ensure that our output reaches and benefits society at large are our very strong partnerships with many of the leading British and global technical organisations. If your company or organisation would like to become involved with or benefit from any of our research, please get in touch with our Associate Dean, Professor David Parish.
