Brian is engaged in an Engineering Doctorate for CREST sponsored by E.On New Build and Technology Ltd, looking at optimisation of the solar photovoltaic design process.
Brian trained as an electrician at Chesterfield College and was worked as an electrical engineer specialising in renewable energy and building services at the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth, Cymru. This was followed by a MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology at Loughborough University. Brian worked as an electrical engineer on hydroelectric schemes for Dulas Ltd.

Most solar photovoltaic (PV) optimisation work to date has tended to take a reductionist approach, focusing on how individual parameters affect energy performance of systems. The impact of design choices on financial payback have previously been researched separately, thereby overlooking potentially significant interactions. This research project takes a more holistic approach to the problem of system optimisation. It is unique in taking a systems engineering approach to solar PV research, and recognises the needs of designers and specifiers in analysing the effect of design choices on financial payback.
Brian teaches Solar photovoltaic systems at the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth, Cymru on a City & Guilds PV course for installers. He is also a consultant to City & Guilds on content and delivery of environmental technologies courses.
