Funding |
|
Fees and living expenses The cost of study depends upon whether a student is classed as a home or overseas student. There are Full-Time and Part-Time tuition fees to carry out postgraduate research. It is estimated that, in addition to tuition fees, it will cost £6,100 to cover living expenses in Loughborough for a twelve month period. Funding Sources Students who are accepted to carry out research in the Department of Information Science will need to provide evidence of funding. Each year the Faculty of Science offers a limited number of joint and fully funded research studentships to UK/EU students. Those considering applying for University funding might like to consult information about full-time studentships. Another way of obtaining funding is through the various external funding bodies . If home students find themselves in severe financial difficulties they can apply for access funds. Department funds The Department has a small budget which is available to enable students in their research. Funding can be requested to cover travel expenses if a student is giving a paper at a conference or to cover field work expenses. Other expenses may also be reimbursed and students should consult Gill Ragsdell to find out about Departmental funding. The following Research Councils all offer Research Studentships, for up to three years full-time study, for higher degrees by research. Arts and Humanities Research Council The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) provides studentships for research into all areas of the arts and humanities including librarianship and information science. Well qualified candidates should approach the Department about applying as eligible students are nominated by the Head of Department. The closing date for nominations is the 1st May. Overseas students are not eligible for these awards. Biotechnology and Biological
Sciences Research Council The Biotechnology and Biological Research Council (BBSRC) provides studentships for research into all areas of non-medical biology. Well qualified candidates should approach the Department about applying as eligible students are nominated by the Head of Department. The closing date for nominations is the 31st July. Overseas students are not eligible for these awards. Economic and Social Research
Council The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) provides studentships to fund research into the social sciences. Candidates should apply through the research competition for a Research Training Award. The closing date for nominations is the 1st May for non-quota courses and the 31st July for quota courses. Overseas students are not eligible for these awards. Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has funding for research into chemistry, engineering, manufacturing, materials science, mathematics and technology. Well qualified candidates are nominated for an award by the Head of Department. The closing date for nominations is the 31st July (Standard and Case Awards). Any doubts about eligibility should be dealt with using the EFI form (from EPSRC) before nomination. Overseas students are not eligible for these awards. Students from countries in the European Union (EU) can apply for the same awards as UK students. However, only tuition fees will be covered as EC students are not eligible to receive maintenance support (unless resident for at least three years before the start of study). Students should make enquiries to the award-making body. Most students are expected to cover their own living expenses. Funding Opportunities for International Research Students The Overseas Research Students Fees Support Scheme (ORS) is sponsored by the government. The limited number of studentships awarded are for research students only. The scholarship covers the difference between 'home' fees and 'overseas' fees. The awards are offered on a competitive basis and students are nominated through their department. The British Council can also give advice to overseas candidates about funding and award schemes.
