Physical Science at Loughborough (incorporating the Departments of Chemistry and Physics) was the highest scoring subject of any institution in the country in the recent National Student Survey, as highlighted by The Guardian (2005). The Department of Chemistry provides a friendly and supporting environment with about 300 students reading for the taught undergraduate (MChem and BSc) or postgraduate (MSc) programmes together with typically 10 postdoctoral research fellows, 70 postgraduate research workers (MPhil and PhD) and 25 academic staff. An active staff-student committee meets regularly to discuss academic and non-academic issues and the department also boasts three football teams.
"Its not just chemistry that's a winner
here. The three departmental football teams have dominated both the top
and bottom of the staff student football tournament recently and hope
to do so for the near future, so why not watch us next year!" The Department offers seven Undergraduate programmes and a range of taught MSc programmes. The contents of these modular, taught programmes are strongly influenced by the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and industrial links with the department are strong. The option of a supervised year of industrial (or professional) training is available within all undergraduate programmes and this leads to the additional qualification of Diploma in Industrial (or Professional) Studies (DIS or DPS). Lecturers from industry contribute to the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and sponsor research projects. Among the undergraduate courses available we have pure Chemistry, Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Chemistry with Analytical Science, Chemistry and Sports Science and Chemistry with a Foundation Year. Our taught postgraduate masters programmes include: Analytical and Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Science. |
