Biological Engineering

The Department conducts research in biochemical engineering, food technology, regenerative medicine and microbiology.
Research projects cover a wide range of topics including:
- inactivation of spores e.g. those responsible in healthcare associated infections
- biofilms in food processing
- heat and mass transfer in food processes
- spray-freeze-drying processes
- kinetics of fat crystallization
- generation of pancreatic ß-cells from stem cells
- flow cytometry and cell sorting - understanding the interaction of the cell with the process engineering environment
- fermentation as well as cell and tissue culture
- scale-up of cell based processes
- mixing in the bioprocess industries
- development of non-invasive analytical techniques applied to cell fermentation and cell culture
- drug delivery devices for skin and intervertebral disc
- bioreactor technology for growing artificial tissues
