Welcome to the School of Art and Design at Loughborough University. In the brief pages that follow, my colleagues and I will introduce you to the taught programmes in the Department, from our Foundation course to undergraduate BA (Hons) programmes in art and design and our MA by individual project. As a full-service art and design department within a well-established campus University, we are able to offer a unique range of programmes and facilities to our students, designed to enable you to develop your skills as an artist/designer in a challenging atmosphere of contemporary practice, critical debate and professional dialogue.

Each of our programmes brings technical expertise together with critical and conceptual content so that student-practitioners develop their own work at the cutting edge of their chosen field. For these reasons, the School of Art and Design has been rated amongst the top five University art and design providers in national surveys, has achieved consistently high teaching quality ratings and has an excellent record of graduate employability.

Statistics aside, the School prides itself on its commitment to developing the skills and abilities of student artists and designers within a context of creative and intellectual independence so that our graduates are prepared to play an active role in the arts and creative industries of the 21st Century. We welcome your interest in the Department and would be happy to answer more detailed questions you may have concerning any aspect of our provision or of studying at Loughborough University. Please feel free to contact us directly and to attend one of our Open Days, held throughout the academic year.

Research success in Loughborough

Loughborough submitted over 94% of its academic staff for assessment as part of the 2008 RAE – a rise of around 16% from the last RAE in 2001 and one of the highest returns of any university in the country.

Every department was found to be undertaking research that is internationally recognised, with 18% of the University’s research considered to be ‘world leading’.

Loughborough’s research across six departments was assessed as the best in the UK. A further three departments were assessed as being in the top five in the country.

Ten departments have over 20% of their research judged to be ‘world leading’.

Loughborough has made outstanding progress since 2001. The Times Higher Education magazine named Loughborough as one of three rising stars among research-intensive universities and the online specialist newspaper Research Fortnight has placed Loughborough 23rd, a rise of nine places from 2001.

70% of the Department’s research is of an international standard (rated 2*, 3* or 4*)  in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
